Our Origin Story

Founding Brand Members & the Birth of an Industry

Fan manufacturing in India took root in the 1920s-30s, with Calcutta emerging as the country's first production hub through pioneers like Clyde Fans and Indian Electric Works. By 1950, a handful of dedicated entrepreneurs came together to form the Fan Makers Association (FMA) - the forerunner of IFMA - to streamline standards, encourage collaboration and represent a fast-growing industry.

By the turn of the century, as the industry diversified, FMA was rebranded as the Indian Fan Manufacturers Association (IFMA), reflecting a broader vision. Today, IFMA represents 120+ members - established brands and emerging players alike - united in shaping the future of the global fan industry.

Gaurav Dhawan

EVP and BU Head (ECD), Orient Electric Limited

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the new digital home of the Indian Fan Manufacturers' Association (IFMA), the apex body representing the Indian Fan Industry.

More than just a website, this platform reflects the transformation of our industry itself. It combines fresh content, contemporary design, and a renewed narrative that showcases the vibrancy, innovation, and aspirations of the Indian Fan Industry. I am confident that visitors will find it informative, engaging, and a valuable source of insights into our industry, its stakeholders, and the initiatives being undertaken by IFMA.

For over 75 years, IFMA has stood at the forefront of the industry's development. Through decades of change, the Association has worked tirelessly to address critical challenges, strengthen the industry's foundations, and create an ecosystem that supports sustainable growth. From combating the spread of unorganized and sub-standard products, to nurturing a robust vendor base and contributing to the development of industry standards and specifications, IFMA has played a pivotal role in shaping the sector's evolution.

The results of this collective effort are evident. What began as a modest manufacturing sector has today evolved into an industry estimated at over Rs. 15,000 crore, serving millions of consumers across India and beyond. Product quality, technological sophistication, aesthetics, and design have advanced dramatically, placing Indian manufacturers among the best in the world.

As we look ahead, I firmly believe that the Indian Fan Industry is entering its Golden Era.

A unique convergence of consumer aspirations, technological innovation, energy-conscious choices, and design-led living is redefining the role of the fan in modern homes and workplaces. The future of our industry will be shaped by three powerful pillars:

01

Technological Advancement

The adoption of next-generation technologies that enhance performance, reliability, connectivity, and the overall consumer experience.

02

Design, Aesthetics & Lifestyle Integration

The transformation of fans from purely functional products into lifestyle-enhancing elements that complement contemporary interiors and evolving consumer preferences.

03

Energy Efficiency & Sustainability

Accelerating the transition towards highly energy-efficient products that reduce energy consumption, support national sustainability goals, and contribute to a greener future.

The opportunities before us are significant. With innovation as our driving force, India's fan industry is well positioned to emerge as a global benchmark for quality, efficiency, and design excellence.

I would like to congratulate the IFMA Connect Sub-Committee for their vision, commitment, and exceptional efforts in creating this contemporary, informative, and world-class digital platform. Their work has given our industry a powerful new voice and a modern window to the world.

I hope this website becomes a trusted destination for industry members, policymakers, partners, media, and consumers alike, showcasing not only our rich legacy and achievements but also the exciting future that lies ahead.

Together, let us continue to shape an industry that combines innovation, sustainability, and excellence, while proudly contributing to India's manufacturing growth story.

Sustainability & Energy Efficiency

Over the past decade, the Indian fan industry has led an energy-efficiency revolution - from BLDC motor adoption to mandatory BEE star labelling.

In the past 6-8 years, the Indian ceiling fan industry has undergone a dramatic transformation with the mainstream adoption of BLDC (Brushless DC) motors - combining an electronic controller, electric motor and permanent magnets to deliver precise speed control at a fraction of the power draw.

In Their Own Words

Voices of Past Leadership

Reflections from IFMA's recent chairmen on the industry's journey and the road ahead.

A S Radhakrishna - Bajaj Electricals Ltd.Chairman, IFMA (2012-13)

Fan industry in India is witnessing a lot of action and churning in recent years. From being an industry of a few major brands, we are seeing a plethora of new brands entering successfully. The extension of electrical brands to the fans category is a new trend, resulting in increased product availability in the market. Another welcome sight is the hi-tech, smartly designed, good looking fans. Both these trends will add strength to the industry. IFMA, by bringing in most of the industry stakeholders and the relevant Government agencies together, is contributing immensely in this metamorphosis.

Rohit Mathur - Usha International Ltd.Chairman, IFMA (2014-17)

As Chairman of IFMA, I drove transformation through policy advocacy, contributing to the GST reduction from 28% to 18%, while promoting energy efficiency, innovation and wider participation. Evolving consumer preferences, design and performance, together with AI-enabled and smart technologies, will create new opportunities, enhance consumer relevance and drive sustainable growth and profitability - the industry needs to brace up to the same. I wish the fan industry and IFMA all the best, and I am confident the Golden Era of the fan industry has begun. My compliments to the new team.

Rangarajan Sriram - Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd.Chairman, IFMA (2017-19)

My years in the fan and consumer durables industry taught me that leadership is about building institutions, not just brands. IFMA has been a quiet but powerful force in shaping industry standards, driving innovation, and giving Indian manufacturers a collective voice on the global stage. As the industry moves toward smarter, more energy-efficient products, I see IFMA's role becoming even more vital - as a bridge between tradition and technology, and between individual companies and a shared industry purpose. I'm proud to have been part of that journey.

Anuj Poddar - Bajaj Electricals Ltd.Chairman, IFMA (2022-24)

For over seven decades, IFMA has worked with commitment and zeal towards their common endeavour - Keeping India Cool. The Indian fan industry stands at an exciting crossroads, driven by technology, energy efficiency, smart products and growing demand. There is also a significant opportunity to establish a stronger presence in global markets, particularly in Europe; IFMA must provide the impetus and collective support to make this possible. The way forward is clear: innovate relentlessly, focus on quality and compliance, embrace sustainability, strengthen supply chains, collaborate and expand. My best wishes to IFMA and the industry for continued success.
